By: Ocileia Moura, mother of João Neto, who has special needs, and Planning Coordinator at Aeris Services.

Being a mother has always been one of the most important roles in my life! But it was when João Neto, my son, was about to turn 2 years old that this story began to take on new meanings. My husband was the first to notice some different behaviors. At first, I couldn’t see them clearly. But, over time, what seemed subtle became more evident, and together, we decided to seek answers to support our son in the best way possible. Thus began our journey. A journey marked by discoveries, uncertainties, and also a lot of learning! Between professionals, exams, evaluations, school choices, clinics, and therapies, we found our way. Even with the lack of knowledge and fear, there was something very strong in us: the desire to do the best for João. Since then, we have lived a routine of constant attention, adaptation, and care. We seek to provide experiences that contribute to his development in ASD, celebrating each achievement with emotion and gratitude. We remain steadfast, with faith and the certainty that we are always learning and evolving together. In the workplace, for a long time, I carried a silent concern: that of not being seen differently or as someone seeking privileges. Therefore, few people knew this part of my story. But the truth is that being a mother of a child with special needs does not diminish anyone’s professional capacity. On the contrary. It requires strength, resilience, wisdom, flexibility, and great emotional intelligence to deal with multiple demands at the same time. Still, we are human. We get tired, we feel fear, we get anxious, and all of this should be understood with more empathy. I continue to wish to live in a world with more respect and less judgment. A world where stories like mine are welcomed, understood, and valued. Because, in the end, it’s not just about challenges. It’s about love, continuous learning, and a profound transformation that moves everything around us.
